About Dooagh
Dooagh is a small north-west-facing bay on the west side of Achill Island, just past Keel. In 2017 the bay made international news when the sand returned to the beach after thirty years - the village beach had washed away in 1984 and reappeared overnight in a winter storm.
The bay catches W to NW swells and works on E offshore winds. It's smaller and more sheltered than Keel, useful when the main Achill beach is too windy or too big. Mid tide is best. The village has a couple of pubs and some accommodation.
Hazards & Notes
- Rocks at the bay ends
- Rips on bigger swells
- Cold North Atlantic water year-round
- Achill weather changes fast - check the wind
