About Mossies

Mossies is the peak most Kerry surfers mean when they say "the Maharees": a sandbar off Fahamore at the north-west corner of the Maharees peninsula, where Brandon Bay's long strand turns to face south-west. It picks up W–NW groundswell wrapping into the bay and produces clean, punchy lefts and rights that hold their shape better than the open beach further south.

The shore here faces WSW, so the true offshore is an easterly; the south-easterlies that clean up the rest of the bay blow side-offshore and still work. Mid tide is the sweet spot, and there's a surf school in the bay if you need one.

Hazards & Notes

  • Rips along the sandbars, stronger on bigger swells
  • Crowds on the good days — the best-known peak in the bay
  • Cold water year-round
