About Curracloe
Curracloe is an 11 km sandy beach just north of Wexford town, on Ireland's east coast. It's best known as the location for the D-Day opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan, but among Irish surfers it's quietly known as a reliable east-coast beach break that comes alive when a storm system delivers a clean E or SE swell across the Irish Sea.
East-coast surf is different from the Atlantic west: smaller, shorter period and less consistent, but more often than not the day after west-coast spots have shut down with storm chop, Curracloe is offering clean fun-sized peaks. It's especially good for beginners and intermediates - the beach is forgiving and there's room to spread out along the strand.
Hazards & Notes
- Less consistent than Atlantic west coast - check the forecast carefully
- Rip current can form between sand bars on bigger swells
- Busy with swimmers and walkers in summer
- Cold water · proper wetsuit needed outside high summer
